A Course in Miracles, faster and easierPhysical Symptoms Questionnaire

The body exists in the mind and all physical symptoms are an attempt to use the body inappropriately to solve your perceived problems. All physical healing is the result of healing your mind. The purpose of this questionnaire is not to blame you, but to uncover the real reason physical symptoms are manifesting in your body. This may or may not lead to you accepting healing now. But by being honest with yourself about how you are using the body to solve your perceived problems you are no longer a victim of the body and you take the first step toward accepting that your mind is the source of your symptoms. This is the first step in physical healing.

Remember that even though it is always your mind that heals the body, for a while you may still need outside agents (doctors, healers, medicine, etc.) to represent healing for you. You are not "failing" because you seek outside help. In time, you will be able to accept direct healing through your mind. Always follow the Holy Spirit's guidance and do not judge the form in which healing comes to you.


Print this page and answer the questions in-depth in writing. Focus on one illness/pain/injury at a time. If you are experiencing a syndrome, consider it one illness. Be unstintingly honest with yourself and go deep with these questions. You may wish to revisit these questions from time to time.



1. Does this illness/pain/injury represent something obvious? If so, what?

If it does not, list possible metaphors for it. This may uncover its purpose for you. (For example, shoulder pain representing "shouldering a burden"; heart problems because of a broken heart, etc.).

2. Are you using this illness/pain/injury to get rest?

If so, can you give yourself permission to rest when you need it? If not, why not?

3. Are you using this illness/pain/injury to give yourself time to think about or process something? If so, what?

If yes, can you give yourself permission to take down time just to think and process? If not, why not?

4. Are you using this illness/pain/injury to get attention?

If yes, can you directly ask others to meet your needs? If not, why not?

5. Is the illness/pain/injury an expression of repressed emotions like anger or grief?

If yes, can you give yourself permission to feel these emotions directly? If not, why not?

If you cannot work through these emotions yourself, are you willing to get help to do so? If not, why not?

6. Does this illness/pain/injury help you avoid a situation?

If yes, can you give yourself permission to say "no" to the situation? If not, why not?

7. Are you using this illness/pain/injury as a distraction from something going on within you?

If yes, can you look directly at what is going on? If not, why not?

If you cannot look directly within yourself alone, are you willing to get help to do so? If not, why not?

8. Are you using this illness/pain/injury to punish yourself for something you feel guilty about?

If yes, can you accept that correction, not punishment, is an appropriate response to a mistake?

If yes, can you correct the mistake?

If yes, are you willing to do so? If not, why not?

Do you need to make amends to someone to release yourself from the guilt?

If yes, are you willing to do so? If not, why not?

9. Is the illness/pain/injury a symptom of fear?

If yes, what are you afraid of and how is the illness/pain/injury helping you to deal with it?

If you cannot work through the fear by yourself, are you willing to get help to do so? If not, why not?

10. How would your life be negatively impacted if this illness/pain/injury were removed?

11. How would your life be positively impacted if this illness/pain/injury were removed?
